What Are Marine Grade Corrosion Resistant Alloys

Aluminum is 100% recyclable and retains its properties indefinitely. What makes aluminum so corrosion-resistant?

1000 series

1100 aluminum is a commercially pure aluminum. It has excellent corrosion resistance and is common in the chemical and food processing industries. Otherwise, it is a soft and malleable metal with excellent workability. It can be welded by any method but cannot be heat treated.

3000 series

Aluminum Alloy 3003 is the most common aluminum alloy. It is pure commercial grade aluminum, 20% stronger due to the addition of manganese and copper. It also has excellent corrosion resistance, workability, and can be welded or brazed, drawn or spun.

5000 series

5000 aluminum alloys are the well known marine grade aluminum alloys. The machining 5083 aluminum is a very popular aluminum alloy because it has a highest strength of all non-heat treatable grades. Because of its resistance to corrosion, it is particularly common in marine and salty atmospheres. It has excellent workability and is easy to draw or form into complex shapes.

6000 series

6061 aluminum is the most versatile of the heat-treatable alloys, including corrosion resistance, workability when annealed, and weldability. You'll find Alloy 6061 in products and applications that require the triple property of good appearance, better corrosion resistance, and good strength.

6063 aluminum alloy is often referred to as a construction alloy because of its high strength, high finish, and high corrosion resistance. Both 6061 and 6063 aluminum alloy can be used for marine applications like shipbuilding.

2000 and 7000 series

In the aerospace industry, high strength and high corrosion resistance are required. For this reason, the aerospace industry is generally limited to Series 2 and Series 7 aluminum. Pure aluminum cladding gives the 2xxx and 7xxx aluminum aloys the corrosion resistance it needs without compromising the strength of structural aluminum.

Aluminum alloy 2024 is very commonly used as it combines high strength with excellent fatigue resistance. Of all aluminum alloys, 7075 aluminum tooling plate is one of the strongest. Like the 2024, it has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and is used in parts subject to high stresses.
