ER4043 VS ER5356 Aluminum Welding Wire

ER4043 and ER5356 aluminum welding wire are two of the most widely used filler metals in the aluminum fabrication industry and have been used for more than 65 years. Some people would think that these two filler metals can handle the welding of all aluminum alloys. Obviously, this is not true and and in some special applications other filler metals are often needed.

However, in most everyday welding applications, ER4043 or ER5356 will suffice. It is generally believed that all arc-weldable 6-series aluminum alloys, such as 6005, 6061, 6063, 6082, 6351, and all 5-series aluminum alloys, can be welded with ER5356 welding wire.

In addition, all arc-weldable 6-series aluminum alloys and 5-series aluminum alloys with magnesium content less than 2.5%, such as 5005, 5050 and 5052, can be welded with ER4043.

However, considering the selection of welding wire only from the perspective of the chemical composition of the base metal has great limitations. Therefore, before choosing these two welding wires, it is best to consider the following characteristics of these filler metals.

ER4043 wire is an aluminum filler metal mainly added with 5% silicon, and ER5356 is an aluminum filler metal mainly added with 5% magnesium. ER4043 is not recommended for welding any magnesium-based alloys (5 series) with a magnesium content exceeding 2.5%, such as 5086 or 5083, etc. This is mainly due to the large amount of silicon in the ER4043 filler metal that will interact with the magnesium in the base metal, which will reduce mechanical properties.

ER4043 can be used in working environments with operating temperatures exceeding 150°F (66°C). In contrast, ER5356 filler metal is not suitable for prolonged high temperature environments due to its 5% magnesium content.

ER4043 filler metal is less ductile in the as-welded condition than ER5356. Be sure to consider this feature if forming is required after welding. In addition, ER4043 welding wire is softer than ER5356. Typically, when gas metal arc welding (GMAW) is performed, the wire feedability is relatively poor.

When the transverse tensile strength of the full penetration weld is required to meet the requirements of the base metal (usually used for welding procedure qualification), the ER5356 filler metal can usually only meet the minimum welding strength requirements of 5005, 5050, 5052 and 5086, for 5083 and 5456, etc. , it may not meet its minimum weld strength requirements. 5183 welding wire is needed.
