5083 Aluminum Stock for Shipbuilding
In the shipbuilding industry, the choice of materials directly affects the safety, durability and overall performance of the hull. 5083 marine aluminum plate has become one of the preferred materials for modern shipbuilding due to its excellent comprehensive performance.
Why is 5083 aluminum plate used for shipbuilding
AA5083 alloy belongs to Al-Mg alloy, with a magnesium content of up to 4.0-4.9%, which gives it medium strength (tensile strength 110-136 MPa, yield strength ≥110 MPa) and excellent specific strength.
Compared with traditional steel, its density is only 1/3 of that of steel, which can significantly reduce the weight of the hull, reduce energy consumption and increase load-bearing capacity. For example, in parts such as ship decks and side plates, the lightweight advantages of 5083 aluminum sheet are particularly prominent, while meeting the structural strength requirements.
Ships are exposed to high-salt and high-humidity marine environments for a long time, so the corrosion resistance of materials is crucial. 5083 aluminum plate forms a dense oxide film by adding trace amounts of chromium (0.05-0.25%) and manganese (0.4-1.0%) to effectively resist seawater erosion. Its corrosion resistance far exceeds that of 6-series and 7-series aluminum alloys, especially in intergranular corrosion tests, and must pass strict certification by authoritative organizations such as DNV, CCS, ABS,etc.
Welding processes are frequent in shipbuilding. The 5083 aluminum plate has good crack resistance. It can be welded by various methods such as TIG and MIG, and the weld strength is close to that of the parent material. Its cold processing performance is also outstanding. Aluminum plates in tempers such as H116 and H321 can be processed into complex structural parts by bending, stamping and other processes, but attention should be paid to state selection (such as O , H111, etc. are more suitable for bending) and processing parameter optimization.
To ensure the safety of ships, 5083 marine aluminum plates need to be certified by classification societies. The domestic market is mainly CCS certified, while the international market needs to comply with DNV GL, BV and other standards. Haomei Aluminum’s 5083 aluminum plate has got the certification of these mainstream classification societies.
Supply status and typical applications
Common tempers: O (annealed), H111 (lightly processed), H112 (hot processed), H116 (corrosion-resistant stable), H321 (strain hardening and stabilized), etc.
Application scenarios: 5083 H116/H321 is suitable for corrosive environments such as ship sides and bottom outer plates; 5083 H112/H111 is used for structural parts such as decks and engine pedestals; O is suitable for parts that require deep processing.
