What Is Aluminum Boat Material

Although pure aluminum is extremely corrosion-resistant, it still faces serious challenges in salt water and is not strong enough to carry the load of a ship. The aluminum boat material usually chooses 5xxx aluminum alloys with excellent seawater corrosion resistance, excellent welding performance, and the highest strength and hardness among work-hardened aluminum alloys.

5083 marine aluminum sheet has high plasticity, toughness and corrosion resistance, especially in the atmosphere, fresh water and sea water. At the same time, it has good welding performance and can be processed by various welding methods. In the shipbuilding industry, 5083 aluminum plate is widely used in hull structures, outfitting parts, decks, cabin partitions, etc.

5052 aluminum sheet has good tensile strength, fatigue strength and excellent corrosion resistance, especially high resistance to salt spray corrosion in marine environment. It is suitable for the manufacture of economical aluminum alloy ships. In addition to being used in ship hull, 5052 alloy can also be used in cable trays, ship sinks and cabin floors.

5086 aluminum alloy is not strengthened by heat treatment, but by strain hardening or cold working of the material. Heat treatment does not significantly affect the strength, so 5086 is easy to weld and retains most of its mechanical strength. Good welding results and excellent corrosion resistance in seawater make 5086 very popular in the construction of ship gangways, ships and yacht hulls.

Marine 6xxx alloys are mainly used to produce extruded profiles, and their representative alloys are AA6061 alloy (mainly used in the United States and Canada) and AA6082 alloy (mainly used in European countries). AA6082 alloy is a common light structural material in Europe, widely used in transportation vehicles and general industry.

6061 marine alloy aluminum is a precipitation hardening alloy containing magnesium and silicon used in the manufacture of marine fittings and hardware. This marine aluminum alloy has excellent weldability and good mechanical properties and is one of the most commonly used general-purpose alloys.

Heat treatment has a significant impact on the properties of 6 series aluminum alloys. For example, after T6 heat treatment, the strength and hardness of 6061 aluminum alloy can be increased by 20%-30%, while the plasticity and toughness are reduced. Proper artificial aging treatment can further improve the strength and hardness of the alloy and reach its optimal state.
