The Application and Development of Marine Aluminum Sheet

Because marine aluminum sheet has high specific strength, good seawater corrosion resistance, weldability, easy processing and forming, no low temperature brittleness, non-magnetic and other characteristics.

Its application in shipbuilding can effectively reduce the weight of ships, improve stability, and increase speed, etc. Therefore, aluminum alloy has become one of the main structural materials of ships in many countries in the world.

At present, aluminum is not used much in the manufacture of ships. Globally, its consumption only accounted for about 1.7% of total aluminum consumption in 2013. In the future, the use of aluminum in ships will increase significantly, but the average annual growth rate before 2025 will not exceed 7.5%.

In the 1930s, 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was used, and the hull was constructed by riveting. In the 1940s, weldable and corrosion-resistant 5xxx aluminum alloys were developed, and TIG welding technology began to be adopted in the 1950s.

During this period, the application of aluminum alloys in shipbuilding progressed rapidly. In the 1960s, the U.S. Navy successively developed 5086-H32 and 5456-H321 aluminum alloy plates, 5086-h111 and 5456-h1111 aluminum profiles. The H116 and h117 tempers solved the exfoliation corrosion and intergranular corrosion, which was a major progress in the development of marine aluminum alloys in the 1960s.

In Japan, 5083, 5086 and 6N01 aluminum alloys are mainly used, and en aw 5083 h111 is often used in the structure, but its content should be controlled below 4.9% to prevent stress corrosion cracking.

The United States also use 5456 aluminum alloy for shipbuilding. It has a higher magnesium content than 5083 aluminum alloy, but heat treatment measures to prevent stress corrosion should be taken.

At present, the aluminum alloys used in ship hull structures are mainly 5083, 5086 and 5456, which have good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and weldability. The Norwegian Shipbuilding Association stipulates that 5454 aluminum alloy is used, and the tensile strength of its plate is the same as that of 5086 aluminum alloy. The United States mainly uses 5456 aluminum alloy, but recently aluminum alloy 5086 is widely used for high-speed boats.
