ABS Certification 6061 6082 Aluminum Sheet

The 6-series aluminum sheet is an aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy, and its representative grades are 6061, 6063 and aluminum 6082 sheet. Unlike the other 7-series aluminum sheets, the tempers of 6000 series is mainly T temper and the most common tempers are T5 and T6.

Before explaining the difference between T5 and T6, users must first understand the following two terms:

Aging: The process of eliminating internal stress in metal.

Quenching: heating the metal to a certain temperature and then cooling it suddenly to achieve the required hardness. 2, 6, and 7 series aluminum plates can all be quenched to improve their strength.

T5 temper refers to the aluminum plate being extruded from the extruder and then cooled by air to quickly reduce the temperature to achieve the required hardness requirements (Webster 8-12 hardness).

T6 temper refers to the aluminum plate being instantly cooled by water after being extruded from the extruder, so that the aluminum plate can reach higher hardness requirements (Webster 13.5 hardness or more).

The air cooling time is relatively long, usually 2-3 days, which we call natural aging; while the water cooling time is short, which we call artificial aging. The main difference between T5 and T6 states is strength. The strength of T6 state is higher than that of T5 state, and the performance in other aspects is similar. Aluminum sheet with T6 temper is relatively expensive.

What is internal stress elimination?

During the production process of aluminum plates, due to heating and extrusion, the density between crystals is uneven, and the energy cannot be fully released, and accumulates inside the aluminum plate. This energy is called internal stress. The production processes of some users (such as heating, bending, deep drawing, stretching, etc.) will release the internal stress of the aluminum plate, causing the aluminum plate to bend or have uneven surface, so the internal stress of the aluminum plate needs to be released first.

The process of eliminating internal stress is very simple. After the aluminum plate goes down the assembly line, the aluminium sheet manufacturer will add a process to stretch the aluminum plate with a machine to release the energy inside the aluminum plate.

6061 aluminum plate is one of the commonly used mold aluminum plates. It belongs to aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy. The alloy formed by the three elements of aluminum-magnesium-silicon in a certain proportion has better performance and is one of the main materials for manufacturing high-end precision molds.
