What Are The Main Aluminum Marine Plates?

Aluminum alloy is a kind of non-ferrous metal, which has the advantages of low density and high strength, and has excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance. Since the end of the 19th century, aluminum marine has gradually been applied in the fields of shipbuilding and marine engineering.

The 5-series aluminum alloy is widely used in the shipbuilding field due to its excellent corrosion resistance. The common alloy grades are 5083, 5383, 5052, 5059, 5086. What are their properties and differences?

The 5083 marine aluminum plate is an aluminum-magnesium alloy, a typical anti-rust aluminum plate. Its corrosion resistance, processability, and strength meet the processing requirements of marine aluminum plates. It is widely used for superstructures of various types of ships. At present, many foreign shipyards use this alloy as the raw material for ship plates.

On the basis of 5083 aluminum alloy, 5183, 5283A, 5283B and 5383 aluminum alloys were developed by reducing the content of Fe and Si impurities, slightly increasing the content of Cu and Zn and adding a small amount of Zr. Among them, 5383 aluminum alloy has certain formability and corrosion resistance, and its strength and welding performance are better than 5083 aluminum alloy.

5052 aluminum alloy contains less magnesium and has better formability compared with 5083 alloy. 5083 is harder and has better corrosion resistance than 5052. If it is used in inland freshwater waters, 5052 can be used. If it is used in seawater or highly corrosive waters, 5083 can be used. More aluminum alloy boats will use 5083 for the lower part of the boat (underwater part) and 5052 for the upper part of the boat in order to adapt to the seawater environment and good appearance.

5059 aluminum plate is with excellent comprehensive performance, featuring good corrosion resistance and tensile strength. It is used in ships, tankers and other fields and its market need keeps rising. 5059 grade aluminum alloy is currently recognized as the most technically difficult high-end marine aluminum alloy in the industry.

The main alloy elements of 5086 marine aluminium plate are magnesium and silicon. The product has high corrosion resistance, good weldability, and medium strength. From 1966 to 1971, the United States built 14 "Ashville" class high-speed gunboats. The main deck and bottom plate were made of 12.7mm thick 5086-H32 aluminum alloy, and the profiles were made of 5086-H112 aluminum alloy.
