Aluminum grade 6082 belongs to the Al-Mg-Si series of aluminum alloys that can be strengthened by heat treatment. It has medium strength, good welding performance and corrosion resistance. It is mainly used in transportation and structural engineering industries, such as bridges, cranes, roof frames and refrigerated containers.

The mechanical properties of 6082 aluminum alloy are very demanding, and its tensile strength is ≥310MPa. When the Mg2Si content increases from 0.5% to 1.0%, the tensile strength of the alloy can be doubled, and the tensile strength can be further increased by continuing to increase the Mg2Si content, but the quenching sensitivity and extrusion deformation resistance of the alloy also increase. The 6082 alloy also needs to add a certain amount of Mn element to increase the recrystallization temperature of the alloy, prevent recrystallization or recrystallization grain growth during extrusion, and refine the grain. However, if the Mn content is too high, the quenching sensitivity of the alloy will be increased, and at the same time, a coarse Mn-containing second phase will be formed, which will reduce its inhibitory effect on the recrystallization process, and will also affect the casting performance of the alloy. Therefore, the Mn content should be controlled within the range of 0.4%~0.6%.

Since the 6082 alloy is characterized by containing refractory metal Mn, the presence of Mn can easily cause intragranular segregation and plasticity reduction in the solid-liquid zone, resulting in insufficient crack resistance. Therefore, the melting and casting process mainly pays attention to the following two points: first, choose the appropriate casting temperature.

If the temperature is too high, the liquid cavity will be deepened, and the temperature gradient will increase, resulting in increased casting stress and casting cracks; if the temperature is too low, the fluidity of the metal will be reduced, and cold shut, slag inclusion, and gas escape will easily occur. Therefore, the melting temperature should be controlled within the range of 730~750°C.

Secondly, control the casting speed. hen the casting speed is high, the liquid cavity will be deepened, extending beyond the crystallization tank, and it is easy to form a central crack. At the same time, the casting shell becomes thinner and the segregation tumor increases.
