Research on TIG Welding Process of 5083 Aluminum Plate

The quality 5083 aluminum plate has good welding performance, corrosion resistance and low temperature performance. It has the highest strength among non-heat-treated strengthened aluminum alloys. These excellent comprehensive properties make the welded structure of 5083 aluminum alloy often used in the main structure of ships.

Aluminum and aluminum alloys have a silvery white appearance and physical and chemical properties such as good plasticity, low density, low resistivity, high specific heat, large linear expansion coefficient and large thermal conductivity. These unique physical and chemical properties make aluminum and aluminum alloys have welding characteristics that are different from other metals such as steel.

AI-Mg alloy is a heat-treatment non-strengthening aluminum alloy, and its welding cracks are mostly crystallization cracks. When the Mg content is 0.5%-2.5%, the hot cracking tendency of Al-Mg is high. The Mg content of 5083 aluminum is 4.0%-4.9%, the hot cracking tendency is small, and fine grain elements such as Ti are often added to the parent material to prevent cracks. When TIG welding is used, the welding heat input is more concentrated, which can effectively reduce welding stress and prevent welding cracks.

After welding 5083 aluminum alloy, there is a certain degree of joint softening problem. During TIG welding, due to the relatively concentrated heat, the welding heat affected zone is narrow, and the joint structure is relatively fine, so the problems of softening and reduced corrosion resistance are alleviated.

Whether the welding wire is selected rationally determines the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and crack resistance of the welded joint. Therefore, the selection of welding wire should not only consider the composition requirements of the weld, but also the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, structural rigidity, color and crack resistance of the joint. 5083 aluminum alloy can use two welding wires, ER5356 and ER5183.

Among them, ER5356 can obtain good plasticity after welding, and the color of the weld is consistent with the base after anodizing treatment; ER5183 can obtain good strength and good corrosion resistance after welding, which is especially important for the hull structure that is corroded by seawater for a long time. Therefore, ER5183 welding wire is often used when 5083 aluminum alloy is used as hull structure.
