Marine Grade Aluminum 5083 5052 Properties

The 5000 aluminum alloys is an alloy that t be heat treated and strengthened, but its hardness is higher than that of the 1xxx and 3xxx aluminum alloy. 5052 aluminum s a typical alloy in the Al-Mg series.

Compared with the common 5082 in the same series, 5083 aluminum has a high magnesium content (nearly double that of 5052), so it has higher strength and better corrosion resistance, and is more used in shipbuilding.

5052 aluminum properties

The 5052-O is relatively soft and has high elongation. Therefore, if the 5052 sheet needs to be bent, deep drawing and other mechanical processing, you can choose the O temper, otherwise, you can choose other tempers. Among them, 5052-H112 is more widely used.

Processability analysis

1. Corrosion resistance: 5052 has good corrosion resistance and is a typical rust-proof aluminum.

2. Weldability: 5052 aluminum alloy has good friction stir welding performance. Dynamic recrystallization occurs in the weld area, the weld crystal is refined, and the weld can achieve 0°C~180°C. Any bending and optimization of process parameters can make the strength of the welded joint equal to or higher than that of the base material.

3. Surface treatability: 5 series magnesium aluminum alloy can be anodized, the oxide film is easy to form, the film quality is also better, and it is more suitable for anodizing and coloring. When the magnesium content is high (such as 5083), its brightness is not enough. The magnesium content of 5052 is about half that of 5083 aluminum, so it can be anodized well.

5083 aluminum properties

5083 aluminum plate is with medium strength, good corrosion resistance, good weldability, and good cold drawability. It is widely used to produce aircraft fuel tanks, oil pipelines, transportation vehicles, ship sheet metal, instrument panels, street lamp supports, bolts, hardware, household appliance casings, etc.

In the ship design industry, 5083 aluminum plates in the tempers of H116/H321/H112 are mostly used for the deck and hull. Magnesium strengthens aluminum significantly. For every 1% increase in magnesium, the tensile strength increases by approximately 34MPa. If less than 1% manganese is added, the strengthening effect can be increased. Therefore, adding manganese can reduce the magnesium content and reduce the tendency of hot cracking. In addition, manganese can also precipitate the Mg5Al8 compound evenly, improving corrosion resistance and welding performance.
