Which Aluminum Alloys Are Used in Ships

Almost all aluminum and aluminum alloys are used in ships and marine facilities, but the most commonly used ones are: 5052, 5154, 5454, 5083, 5086, 5056, 6063, 6061, 6N01, 6082,etc. The main types of aluminum materials are: thick plates, thin plates, strips, foils, tubes, bars, small aluminium extrusions, integral extrusions, etc.

The types of hull structures can be divided into three types: transverse frame type, longitudinal frame type and mixed frame type. The bow and stern structures of aluminum alloy small fishing boats, inland ships and large ships are often transverse frame structures; oil tankers and warships often use longitudinal frame structures. The aluminum materials used on the hull are mostly aluminum plates, small aluminium extrusions, wide integral extruded wall panels.

When China manufactured a 60.8m long, 1160t oil tanker, the aluminum used in the hull was as follows: the longitudinal sealed bulkheads were made of 9mm thick corrugated plates, and the transverse bulkheads were made of 7mm thick plates, forming 5 independent cargo holds; the ship's sides were made of 9mm aluminum alloy, the deck was 12mm thick, and the cover was 15mm thick. The hull frame was made of extruded profiles, and the stern was cast with Al-12%Si alloy. The total amount of aluminum used was 92t.

Recently, Japan has developed a semi-cast ship with an aluminum alloy hull. Its bow, stern and hull are made of plates of about 5.4mm, and then these three sections are welded into the hull. The ship is 2.4m wide, 0.58m deep, the hull mass is about 2t, and the total mass is 3.8t. Compared with the same type of FRP (Fiberglass reinforced plastic) ship, the hull mass is reduced by 25%~30%.

5083 aluminum alloy is an aluminum alloy whose main components are aluminum (Al) and magnesium (Mg). It belongs to the aluminum-magnesium alloy family, commonly known as 5 series aluminum alloy.

5083 alloy also contains small amounts of copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn). The addition of these elements can increase the strength and corrosion resistance of the alloy. In addition, 5083 aluminum alloy usually contains trace amounts of elements such as chromium (Cr) and zinc (Zn).

5083 aluminium tube is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, especially suitable for marine environments, so it is often used in the manufacture of ships, hulls, marine structures and other applications in contact with seawater.
