What Grade Aluminum Is Used for Boats

Generally marine aluminum alloys need to have high specific strength and specific modulus, that is, medium strength, corrosion resistance and weldability. At the same time, it also needs to have excellent cold and hot forming functions.

Due to the various processes of cold working and hot working in the manufacture of boats, the aluminum plate for marine use must be easy to form without cracks, and still meet the requirements of strength and corrosion resistance after processing. In view of the above requirements of marine aluminum plate, 5083, 5086, 5059 and 5052 marine grade aluminum stand out among many alloys.

Marine yachts need to use 5083 aluminum plates, inland rivers use 5456 aluminum plates, and domestic park boats generally use 5052 aluminum plates. These three alloys have relatively superior mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and welding properties, and are mainly used in the keel plate, curved outer plate and upper outer plate of the hull structure.

5052 plate containing 2.5% to 5% Mg can have a tensile strength of 196 to 294MPa and can be used as a welding structural material. It has good weldability and corrosion resistance, especially seawater corrosion resistance, when combined with additive metals of appropriate composition.

Ship engines generally use diesel as fuel, and a large amount of exhaust gas is discharged from the chimney. The chimney will tilt backward to facilitate exhaust. The chimney is made of 5052 plate, featuring aging-resistant and safety.

Compared with the machinability of 3003 aluminum, 5052 plate is better. Its seawater resistance is also better. Therefore, 5052 aluminum has become a commonly used marine grade aluminum plate in the shipbuilding industry. 3003 aluminum with higher aluminum content has better ductility. As a thin sheet, 3003 aluminum sheet is also widely used in the machining of marine parts and assemblies that require good formability, high corrosion resistance and good weldability.
