The Alloys of Marine Grade Aluminum Sheet
The marine grade aluminum sheet can be divided into aluminum alloys for hull structures, outfitting and welding. For a long period of time, marine aluminum alloys are mainly selected from Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Si alloy. In recent years, the research on the medium-strength weldable Al-Zn-Mg has also increased.
Al-Mg Alloy
5xxx aluminum alloy belong to Al-Mg alloy. It is non-heat-treated strengthened alloys in which Mg is added for Mg and Mn are added at the same time. Alloys such as alu 5052 and 5083 contains 2.5% to 5% Mg.
With different Mg content, it can have a tensile strength of 196-294MPa, and can be used as a welding structural material. It has excellent corrosion resistance, especially the seawater corrosion resistance.
However, when the Mg content is >5%, the alloy is prone to stress corrosion. Therefore, the method of adding Mn or Cr is usually used to prevent this corrosion phenomenon. In order to prevent the aging softening phenomenon of the alloy at room temperature, a stabilization treatment is required.
Al-Mg-Si Alloy
6xxx aluminum belongs to Al-Mg-Si alloy. The typical ones are marine grade aluminum 6061. is a heat-treatable and strengthened aluminum alloy with Mg2Si as the strengthening phase. The mechanical properties of the T6 temper is higher compared to the T4 temper. This alloy has good processing and formability and corrosion resistance.
Al-Zn-Mg Alloy
Al-Zn-Mg alloy is a binary alloy with Zn as the main additive element and a small amount of Mg. It has a tensile strength of about 294 MPa and excellent weldability. Due to its excellent aging property at room temperature and the softened area due to welding heat, this alloy can naturally recover its mechanical strength after welding. Therefore, it is valued as a welding structure material.
