Marine Sheeting Aluminum for Shipbuilding

Marine sheeting aluminum has been used in the shipbuilding industry for nearly a hundred years. With the rapid development of domestic and foreign shipbuilding industries, the lightweight of ships has been paid more and more attention. Due to the low density, high strength, high rigidity and corrosion resistance of aluminum sheet, it has been a popular choice for shipbuilding.

Among the aluminum alloys, the most resistant to seawater corrosion is the 5000 series, which corrodes very slowly in seawater, and their corrosion resistance is related to the magnesium content. Alloys containing Mg ≤ 5% have good enough corrosion resistance; alloys containing Mg > 5% have a tendency to intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking if heat treatment (annealing) is improper.

In the early 1950s, the lining plates of some oil tankers built in Britain were 5054 alloys and each 30kt-class oil tanker used more than 1,000 tons of aluminum. In 1964, the United States built an all-aluminum barge. The applied aluminum exceeds 180 tons. Whether it is a plate or an extrusion, the 5083 alloy is used.

The shipbuilding industry has special requirements for the strength, corrosion resistance and weldability of aluminum alloys. The 5083 aluminum plate is an aluminum-magnesium alloy, a typical anti-rust aluminum plate. Its corrosion resistance, processability, and strength meet the processing requirements of marine aluminum plates. At present, many foreign shipyards use this alloy as the raw material for marine aluminium sheet.

Another less common marine aluminum board is 1561 aluminum sheet. It has been gradually applied in aluminum alloy special ships because of its high strength and good corrosion resistance. 1561 aluminum alloy is an aluminum alloy with a high magnesium content, and defects such as pores and cracks are easily produced during welding. How to ensure that these defects do not appear in the welds during the hull construction process is the key issue to ensure the production quality.

Haomei marine aluminum sheets have got certifications issued by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). Det Norske Veritas and American Bureau of Shipping are currently the two most recognized classification societies in the world. The approval of these two classification societies marks that Haomei Aluminum has fully entered the shipbuilding field.
