Marine Grade Aluminum Grade 6061 6063 Properties
Aluminum profiles have the advantages of small specific gravity, high specific strength, good seawater corrosion resistance, non-magnetic properties, and good low-temperature performance. As structural materials, they are increasingly valued in the shipbuilding industry. Marine aluminum alloy is particularly suitable for high-speed boats, hydrofoils, hovercrafts, fishing boats and some special purpose boats. The common alloys are 6061, 6063 and 6082.
The commonly used aluminum alloy profiles for portholes in ship superstructures are 6063 aluminum alloy, and aluminum grade 6061 and 6063 profiles are commonly used for masts and gangways. In addition, the wall panels use extruded aluminum-magnesium alloy, which can prevent deformation during welding and ensure a more reasonable stress distribution.
Marine grade aluminum 6061 is a versatile aluminum alloy whose main alloying elements are magnesium, silicon and aluminum. It has the characteristics of good weldability, processability and high strength. 6061 aluminum plates are mostly used in places with higher strength requirements.
The tensile strength of 6061 aluminum plate is between 110-130 MPa, which is higher than most plastic materials. It has a certain degree of corrosion resistance, and with the surface anodization treatment, it can further improve the corrosion resistance and is suitable for applications in various environments.
6063 alloy has lower strength than 6061 aluminum plate, good extrudability, and is a low-alloyed Al-Mg-Si high-plasticity alloy. The hardness of aluminium 6063 T6 is slightly lower than that of 6061T6 aluminum plate. Usually the hardness of 6063T6 aluminum can reach around 85HB.
The mechanical properties of 6063aluminum largely depend on the tempering or heat treatment of the material. 6063 alloy is highly weldable, using tungsten inert gas welding. Generally, after welding, the performance near the weld is 6063-0, with a strength loss of up to 30%. Materials can be reheat treated to restore a higher temper to the entire part.
The main alloying elements of 6063 aluminum alloy are Mg and Si, and there are also small amounts of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Ti and other elements. Sometimes in order to improve the properties of the alloy, some rare earth elements such as Ce, Sc, Y and other elements are added. If the types and contents of alloy elements cannot be reasonably controlled during production, it will have a negative impact on the performance of the product.
