Is Aluminum Salt Water Resistant
The oxide film on the aluminum surface becomes very unstable in the presence of active liquids with extreme pH values (below 4 or above 9) as electrolytes. Salt water is an example of such an electrolyte.
Seawater is the main component of the marine environment and has the highest salt content among known water bodies. Due to the complexity of the marine environment itself and the unstable nature of seawater corrosion, the saltwater corrosion resistance of marine grade metal has become one of the important research topics and is closely related to the service life and safety of the ship. Ship materials are mainly made of metal, and seawater with a high salt content will cause certain corrosion to ship metals.
The working environment of ships requires structural materials to have certain mechanical strength, fatigue strength, elongation and impact resistance. However, it is usually difficult for high-strength aluminum alloys to have excellent corrosion resistance and weldability at the same time. Therefore, aluminum alloys for ships generally use corrosion-resistant and weldable aluminum alloys with medium strength.
The main components of the 5000 marine thin aluminum sheet are aluminum plus magnesium. They are characterized by medium to high strength, excellent seawater corrosion resistance, excellent welding performance, and the highest strength and hardness among work-hardened aluminum alloys (5xxx>3xxx>1xxx). The products are mainly used in marine materials, coastal construction materials, optical supplies, structural materials, low-temperature containers, etc.
The common thickness is 3-50mm, width is 2000mm and the length is 6000/8000/9000/12000mm. Under the condition of ensuring the performance of the ship, the thin aluminum sheet is used as much as possible to reduce the weight of ships.
5052 aluminum sheet is mainly composed of aluminum, magnesium and a small amount of chromium, and has high corrosion resistance and weldability. The hardness of 5052 aluminum alloy is relatively low, usually around 60 Brinell hardness in hardness test.
Hardness is not the only factor that determines the performance of aluminum alloys. Different applications require different characteristics. The corrosion resistance and weldability of material 5052 h32 may be more important in some cases.
