DNV Approved Aluminum Alloys for Fishing Boat

In the past few decades, aluminum hulls have begun to appear and are widely used in fishing boats. Compared with fishing boats made of other materials, aluminum fishing boats have advanced features such as long shelf life, durability, customizability, and environmental protection. Aluminum has gradually become the most widely used material for manufacturing fishing boat hulls.

The increase in new boat sales, the increase in outdoor activities and fishing participants, and the lower cost of aluminum boats than fiberglass boats will be key factors driving the global demand for aluminum fishing boats in the future.

The marine aluminum alloys for fishing boats are processed through multiple rigorous processes and need approval of classification society like DNV. Aluminum-magnesium alloys have stable tensile strength, yield strength, and elastic modulus, and are widely used in aircraft fuel tanks, transportation vehicles, ships, and other fields. Compared with steel structures and fiberglass ships, it is more ideal.

The density of aluminum is 2.8 and the density of steel is 7.8. Specifically, they are much lighter than steel, but they are also lighter than GRP. Light hulls provide better performance (speed), especially in light winds. Generally, light hulls can also be designed with shallow draft, which improves accessibility in shallow rivers and bays. Finally, light hulls translate into lower fuel consumption.

The strength of aluminum is probably the most attractive aspect of aluminum boats. Simply put, the chances of a puncture on the hull from a collision are much less for aluminum than for fiberglass. This is one of the reasons why large aircraft, which require the highest strength, are commonly made of aluminum alloys. Aluminum is one of the least corrosive metals. If properly constructed with the right alloy and welding wire, and maintained, an aluminum boat will last for generations.

5052 aluminum sheet was developed in the United States in the 1930s. What are aluminum alloy 5052 properties? It is a deformable alloy and often called aluminum-magnesium alloy. Because magnesium is the main alloying element in this alloy after aluminum.

5052 aluminum alloy has good corrosion resistance. It has high resistance to salt water and salt spray. Therefore, it has many applications in marine structures such as gas tankers. Aluminum alloy 5052 is comparable to aluminum alloy 6061. The surface of 5052 is smoother than 6061. But it cannot be heat treated. 5052 has higher fatigue strength, elastic modulus and formability. But compared with 6063, its toughness is poor.

6082 aluminum alloy belongs to the aluminum-magnesium-silicon series of heat-treatable and strengthened deformation aluminum alloys. Al 6082 material properties are also very good. It has medium strength, low density, good corrosion resistance, good processing performance and welding performance. It can be used to manufacture high-speed ship hulls, large marine welded structural parts and marine parts.
