Aluminum Flat Sheet for Ships

The marine environment is extremely corrosive to metal materials. Marine grade aluminium sheets must have excellent corrosion resistance to be used for a long time in such a harsh environment. A dense oxide film will form on the surface of the aluminum plate to prevent seawater from further corroding the internal metal. However, aluminum plates with different alloy compositions have different corrosion resistance, which requires extra caution in material selection.

Main marine aluminum alloys

5083 aluminum alloy

5083 aluminum plate belongs to Al-Mg alloy, and the main alloying element is magnesium. It has medium strength, with a yield strength generally between 110-240MPa and a tensile strength of 270-350MPa. This alloy has excellent corrosion resistance and performs well in seawater, making it a common choice for marine aluminum plates.

It has good welding performance and strong welding crack resistance, which can ensure the strength and sealing of the welded parts. 5083 aluminum alloy also has good cold processing properties and can be processed into various hull parts such as ship decks, engine pedestals, ship sides, and bottom outer plates by cold bending and stamping.

5052 aluminum sheet

5052 aluminum alloy is also a widely used rust-proof aluminum. It has high strength, especially good fatigue resistance. Its yield strength is around 90-215MPa, and its tensile strength is 170-290MPa. It is more common in the fuel system of ships.

5086 aluminum plate

As an important member of marine aluminum plates, 5086 aluminum alloy belongs to the aluminum-magnesium alloy series and is widely used in the field of shipbuilding. The content of its main alloying element magnesium is between 3.5% and 4.5%, which gives it many characteristics suitable for shipbuilding.

5086 aluminum machinability is very good. Its tensile strength is usually ≥240MPa. In practical applications, it can effectively resist the tensile stress that ships are subjected to during navigation. For example, when ships are impacted by water flow or pulled by wind and waves, it can ensure that the hull structure is not easily broken.

The conditional yield strength is ≥95MPa, which means that under certain external forces, it can maintain its own shape, is not prone to plastic deformation, and maintains the stability of the ship structure.

In terms of elongation, δ10 (elongation when the gauge length is 10 times the original gauge length) is ≥10%, and δ5 (elongation when the gauge length is 5 times the original gauge length) is ≥12%, which reflects that it has a certain ductility. When it is impacted or subjected to local stress concentration, it will not suddenly break brittlely, but will buffer stress through its own elongation to reduce the risk of structural damage.

In actual ship construction, 5086 aluminum alloy is often used to manufacture the outer plates, superstructure structural parts and other parts of ships. For example, some small and medium-sized fishing boats use a large amount of 5086 aluminum alloy for their hull shells. With its good strength, corrosion resistance and processing performance, it not only ensures the safe navigation of fishing boats in harsh sea conditions, but also can adapt to various stress changes caused by frequent docking, loading and unloading operations of fishing boats.

In the construction of some high-end yachts, 5086 aluminum alloy is also used to build superstructures, such as cockpits and cabin frames, which not only meets the structural strength requirements, but also maintains its beauty during long-term sea voyages due to its excellent corrosion resistance, reducing maintenance workload.
